Kailash Manasarovar Yatra 2025: All about the pilgrimage returning after 5 years

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is scheduled to restart in June 2025 across Sikkim's Nathula Pass following a five-year break.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra will return in June 2025 after a five-year break. After being put on hold because of the pandemic and border conflicts, the significant pilgrimage for Indian worshippers will finally use the shorter Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

This Kailash Yatra is organised annually by the Ministry of External Affairs via two routes: Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim. It takes place from June to September.

(KMY) is known for both its cultural and religious significance for devotees. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent border tensions at the India-China Line of Actual Control brought it to a halt.

Each year, hundreds of individuals participate. Any eligible Indian citizen with a valid passport who wants to travel to Kailash-Mansarovar for religious reasons is welcome to apply for the KMY.

Route and Significance

The far Western Himalayan ranges of the Tibetan Autonomous Region are home to the largest freshwater lake, Lake Mansarovar (also called Manas Sarovar), and the diamond-shaped Mount Kailash (also called Kailasa), which rises to a height of 6,638 metres.

The Nathula route, newly opened in 2015, is a faster and shorter route than the traditional Lipulekh Pass approach. Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is where pilgrims start their trek across the Indo-China border.

They then travel to the holy Lake Mansarovar and engage in the famed parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash, a place of worship for Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus.

Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar are regarded as the holiest places in Buddhism, Bon, Jainism, and Hinduism. Kailash Mansarovar receives a significant influx of pilgrims and explorers from all over the world every year between April and October.

Safety Precautions and Protocols

The Nathula route in Sikkim is regarded as the most accessible and secure option for this pilgrimage due to the region's peaceful environment and well-maintained roads. Pilgrims are required to register in advance with the Ministry of External Affairs.

Participants are required to bring all necessary travel documents and permits and to physically prepare for the demanding high-altitude conditions during the June–August 2025 yatra window.

Infrastructure and Preparations

The Sikkim government has improved the infrastructure along the Nathula route ahead of the 2025 yatra. Two acclimatisation centres will be set up: one near Hangu Lake (14,000 feet) and another at the 16th Mile (about 10,000 feet).

These establishments will offer lodging, medical care, and other necessities to guarantee pilgrims safely acclimate to the high-altitude setting.

Authorities have also enhanced road maintenance and security measures to provide a hassle-free and seamless travel experience.

Location, People, and Language

Mount Kailash is situated in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, home to more than 90% Tibetans and a small number of Chinese and Nepali people.

Standard Tibetan, one of the Tibetan languages, is the official language of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Additionally, the bulk of the population speaks and understands English, and individuals here speak both Chinese and Nepalese.

For anyone who intends to participate in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in 2025, keeping abreast of official announcements and adequately preparing for the trip will be essential to a successful and safe pilgrimage.
